Sutton League Crusaders were up against it again during the weekend of 28/29 January as their No 1 player was out again with a back injury. The team had to recruit a replacement quickly and roped in their old friend Trevor Campbell to stave off potential embarassment!
With Dean Rose and Michael Loveder they found Redlands Bats had strengthened their squad and so a disappointing 1-5 defeat was the outcome. However SL Crusaders remained too strong for the Bristol Civil Service team against whom we secured a 4-2 victory. Title contenders RBL Yaxley and Pavilion took no chances as both put out their strongest sides against us and two 0-6's followed! Some consolation was taken in the last match of the weekend against Kingfisher (Reading) when the Sutton League Crusaders of Trevor Campbell, Dean Rose and Michael Loveder triumphed 6-0 to finish in 4th place, the team having played 10 matches and won 5 of them.

Crusaders' Liam Grant and Isabelle Joubeily were part of the triumphant team at the recently held County Championships in the Cadet Premier Division. Having gained promotion only last season, the Surrey Cadets' main ambition was to stay in the Premier. Other team members included Sasha Gillen and Juliette Moussarie (Ashford TTC) and Diogo Freitas (Graham Spicer TTC). Sasha had journeyed from France to join our squad of young stars.
In their opening match Surrey took on the title holders Lancashire and managed a 5-5 draw. A very strong Yorkshire team were next in line who squeezed past our team 6-4 to eventually take the title by a narrow margin. Sasha was unfortunate to lose to England No 9 James Hobson 8-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-13 and Liam Grant was narrowly defeated by England No 7 Harry Dai 11-8, 10-12, 10-12, 9-11. Isabelle battled well against the Engalnd No 3 Kate Nixon but lost out 11-5, 9-11, 12-12, 5-11. Next time guys!
Surrey did well to beat Sussex 6-4, Middlesex 7-3, Warwickshire 8-2, and Cleveland 10-0. In their final match Surrey forced Lincolnshire into relegation with a 7-3 victory. Liam Grant was outstanding in this match as he beat Nathan Butler 13-11 in the 5th after trailing 2-7. Following this he found himself 2 games to 1 down against England No 10 Matthew Leete only to win 11-8, 5-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-4.
Isabelle finished the day with 11/14 (78.6%) having only lost to players ranked Nos 1, 2 and 3 in England. Surrey finished as highly respectable runners-up which has not been achieved by the county for some years.
Congratulations to Isabelle who found she had risen to No 5 in England – on her 14th birthday. Her 11 wins from the weekend will certainly help to consolidate her position.

SUTTON & DISTRICT LEAGUE AGM 2014: ANNOUNCEMENT!
On behalf of the Surrey Table Tennis Association I’m going to tell you some bits and pieces about one of our rising stars – A regular Sutton League player.
The season started with the Burton Uxbridge 2 star tournament at which both the cadet and junior events were won. Also early in the season was the London Academy 2 star in Edgware where the cadets were won and the same player was runner up in the juniors. In 2014 there was the Horsham Spinners 2 star where our player won both cadets and juniors events.
In January Surrey was competing in the county championships in the Cadet Premier Division. Here there are 7 leading counties battling it out, of which 3 get relegated. Playing at No 1 for Surrey, a record of 11/14 was achieved (78.6%) and Surrey finished as runners up, a whisker behind a very strong Yorkshire team who beat us 6-4 to inflict our sole defeat.
In November and March we faced the challenge of the Junior Premier Division which is seriously strong and we did well to avoid relegation thanks to a valuable contribution from the whole team. Also In January was the Cadet Masters – a gruelling event between the top 12 in England. Our star player commenced proceedings in the 11th slot and finished the weekend in 5th place.
A Junior British League Team in Division 2 saw our player finish with 80% wins and the team in 3rd place, just one point behind the leaders and 6 sets ahead of them!
More recently our young star competed in the London Grand Prix senior tournament, won the Band 4 event and was runner up of the Band 3. She was also awarded player of the tournament which was accompanied by a framed certificate and £50 Bribar voucher.
In the under 14’s Nationals our player reached the semi-finals and was beaten in 4 games by the eventual winner.
The Derby 4 star Band 1 event was added to the growing list of titles; and finally the Blackpool 4 star saw three finals reached – Band 1, cadet singles and junior singles.
Her team has just qualified for the London Youth Games finals in July ...
So in all it’s been a pretty successful season for a young lady who was only 14 in January. The trophy was previously won by Joanna Drinkhall before she became England No 1, and so I’m very pleased to announce that Surrey’s Outstanding Junior of the Year Award goes to Isabelle Joubeily.
Michael Loveder, 18th June 2014.
